Being a librarian is usually about keeping books organised, but the little owl at the centre of Owlbound Tomes has a rather more complicated workload. Magical books have escaped, the paths through the library are disappearing and every journey needs to be planned with care.
Available now for £4.19 across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC, this latest puzzle game from Afil Games puts route planning at the centre of its adventure.

A Library Where Every Step Matters
Owlbound Tomes gives players control over a small owl librarian tasked with recovering runaway magical books. Each book must be delivered to the correct Book Return Table before the owl can finally make it back to her cosy perch.
The challenge (if you can call it that!) comes from the unstable pathways connecting each location. Some tiles collapse after a single crossing, while others can survive two or three trips. That means simply finding a route isn’t enough – you need to consider how often each section will be used and whether it will still be there when you need to return.
You’ll need to examine the board, move tiles into position and work out the best order for collecting and delivering the books. Once the route is set, the owl follows it automatically, leaving your planning decisions to do the heavy lifting.
Across 30 levels and three magical biomes, Owlbound Tomes gradually introduces more inventive challenges. A tile that looks perfectly safe at the beginning of a level might become a problem after several deliveries. The key is to create a route that allows the owl to complete the entire journey without destroying an essential section too early.
A Familiar Formula
While Owlbound Tomes presents its disappearing paths and magical library setting, our own review awarded the game 2.5/5, with the main criticism centred on how familiar the experience feels. We described it as a repackaging of some of Afil Games’ earlier path-making titles, suggesting that the changes to the established formula are too minor to make a significant impression. And we also raised concerns about the publisher returning to safer, repetitive designs rather than pushing its puzzle games in new directions.
Owlbound Tomes may provide a compact set of route-planning challenges, but the extent to which it feels fresh will depend heavily on your familiarity with the formula.
Owlbound Tomes is available now from the Xbox Store in three versions – on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows PC, each priced at £4.19. With 30 levels built around disappearing pathways, the game offers another opportunity to test your planning skills – even if returning players may find some of its ideas rather familiar.
